Fuel Octane Ratings - What Do They Mean & Which One To Use

Have you ever found yourself staring at the fuel pump, wondering what those numbers actually mean? You're not alone. Many drivers pick a gasoline octane rating without knowing its significance or whether they're making the best choice for their vehicle. Let's unravel this mystery together and make your next trip to the gas station an informed one.

What is Octane Rating?

The term "octane rating" refers to a measure of a fuel's ability to resist "knocking" or "pinging" during combustion, caused by the air/fuel mixture detonating prematurely in the engine. In simple terms, it's a gauge of how well the fuel performs under pressure. The higher the octane number, the greater resistance the fuel has to knocking. This knocking can be harmful to your engine over time, so it's important to choose wisely.

Why Does Octane Rating Matter?

Your car's performance and longevity are influenced by many factors, and one of them is using the correct octane-rated fuel. High-performance engines that operate under higher pressures often require higher octane fuel to prevent knocking – which means you should adhere to premium gasoline if your manufacturer suggests it.

Choosing Your Fuel: Regular or Premium?

Most vehicles on the road today are designed to run on regular unleaded gasoline, which typically has an octane rating of around 87. However, some vehicles require mid-grade (around 89) or premium (91-93). It's crucial to know your car's requirements – check your owner's manual for guidance.

You might think that opting for a higher-octane fuel can boost performance or efficiency; however, this is generally a misconception. If your car is designed for regular 87 octane, filling up with premium won't provide any extra bang for your buck. On the other hand, if your vehicle requires premium and you opt for regular, you may experience reduced performance and potentially even engine damage over time.

Special Cases - Turbocharged and Supercharged Engines

Nowadays, turbocharged and supercharged engines are more common than ever before in both high-performance and standard passenger cars. These engines compress air going into the combustion chamber, which increases power but also raises pressure within the cylinder – making them more susceptible to knocking. Consequently, these engines often need at least mid-grade or premium gasoline.

While we are on the topic of fuel - how's your car's fueling system? Haven't checked it in a while? Don't worry, Mountain Tech is here to give your car the care it deserves, so don't hesitate to contact us.
